SourceGlider for Eclipse Release Notes

This chapter contains release notes for SourceGlider for Eclipse. See SourceGlider User Manual for more information or contact us via info@sourceglider.com for further information.

System Requirements

Hardware Requirements

Source analysis tasks always require a lot of computational resources such as time and memory. SourceGlider can compute a lot of various types of analyses. Some of them (e.g. Structure Metrics or Dependencies Analysis) are fast and require less memory than other analyses (e.g. Points To Analysis or Impact Analysis) that are more comprehensive and require more time and memory. You can choose the type of analysis to run and the set of source files to perform the analysis on. Anyway you can perform so-called Quick Analysis that runs almost instantly with a full set of analyses. This means that even if your computer is slow you will still be able to get most of SourceGlider benefits.

There are no minimum requirements, however recommended system configurations requirements are:

  • Memory 512 MB (1 GB is desirable)
  • Processor speed 500 MHz (1 GHz is desirable)

Note: During the installation you will be asked to provide runtime memory settings for Eclipse. The memory settings will be changed to 512 MB by default. If you have memory less than 1 GB, we recommend to disable this change.

Software Requirements

  • Supported operating systems: Windows 98/2000/NT/XP/Vista, Linux and all other operating systems supported by Eclipse (MacOS X, Solaris, AIX, HP/UX, QNX).
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.4.2 is required but recommended is JRE 1.5.0.
  • Eclipse 3.1 or higher is required.
  • Internet Explorer or Mozilla web browsers are required to access the SourceGlider web site from Eclipse.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to display the User Manual.

Installation Instructions

Installation of SourceGlider is simple and easy. If you don't have Eclipse installed on your machine (or if your Eclipse has version lower than 3.1), you have to install it. Simply download Eclipse 3.1 or higher from Eclipse download site and unzip the archive. Download and install SourceGlider. There are two opportunities: run self-extracting installation wizard or extract SourceGlider manually. The first choice is supported only in Windows, the second can be done in any operating system.

Note: You can install SourceGlider only in plugins folder of the corresponding Eclipse instance. You cannot for example install it into Program Files folder. However you can create the separate Eclipse Extension Location wherever you want on your disk. In this case you need to create the folder eclipse in the place you want to keep SourceGlider, create the file .eclipseextension in the eclipse folder and unpack SourceGlider into the eclipse folder (see Manual installation). After starting Eclipse go to menu Help > Software Updates > Manage Configuration, right-click on Eclipse, select Add > Extension Location... and provide the folder in which you have created the subfolder eclipse.

Self-extracting installation wizard (for Windows only)

Download an executable archive file (it should look like SourceGlider-1.0.0-windows.exe). Launch the installator and follow the instructions of the Wizard. You will be asked to locate Eclipse installation folder and to provide runtime memory settings for Eclipse. The memory settings will be changed to 512 MB by default. If you have memory less than 1 GB or the current memory settings are larger than 512MB, click Do not change.

If you have already installed the previous version of SourceGlider, simply run the installation wizard to update SourceGlider. Installation process will be easier and won't require locating Eclipse folder and setting up the memory.
Note: You need to close all instances of Eclipse before starting of Setup.

Manual installation

  • Download the archive (it should look like SourceGlider-1.0.0.zip)
  • Check that your Eclipse has version 3.1 or higher (You can find the version of Eclipse in the file .eclipseproduct). If the version is lower, reinstall Eclipse.
  • Close all instances of Eclipse.
  • Unzip the archive into the Eclipse installation folder (The Eclipse plugins folder should match the corresponding plugins folder in the archive).
  • Change the Eclipse runtime memory settings in the eclipse.ini file. Default memory option looks like -Xmx256m. SourceGlider will run with that option but big and comprehensive analyses are more likely to run out of memory or hang up your computer. So change this option to -Xmx512m or higher.
  • Launch Eclipse.

Note: If you have already installed the previous version of SourceGlider, you need to tell Eclipse that SourceGlider has been updated. You can do it in three ways: start eclipse with -clean option the first time after the re-installation of SourceGlider, clean Eclipse caches before the first launch of Eclipse (like eclipse/configuration) or remove an old version of SourceGlider, launch Eclipse, exit Eclipse, install plugin in the same place, then launch Eclipse again.

Uninstallation

If you were installing SourceGlider with self-extracting installation wizard, uninstall wizard can be accessed by Start > All Programs > SourceGlider For Eclipse > Uninstall SourceGlider. To uninstall SourceGlider manually, simply remove the SourceGlider plugin folder from plugins folder of Eclipse. Note that Uninstall Wizard automatically restores previous Eclipse runtime memory settings that were changed during the installation.

Getting Started

The first time you launch Eclipse after SourceGlider installation the Analysis Report View will be brought to the top of the workbench. You can read the simple instructions from this view at any step during the analysis.

To launch Quick Analysis select some Java Element in the workbench (Position the caret at some method/type/field name in the Java Editor or select some method/type/field in Package Explorer or Outline views and press Ctrl+` (` is the button on the keyboard above the Tab button). After Quick Analysis finishes, Analysis Report View will show all possible information on that Java Element.

To launch Composite Analysis select Source Analysis > Start Analysis in the menu or press button in the toolbar.

Providing License Key

If your SourceGlider copy is unlicensed, and you try to launch the analysis (either Quick Analysis or Composite Analysis), this will lead you to the Enter License Key dialog window. You need to paste the key that you have recently received by email into that dialog. You can do it in three ways: either paste from clipboard, get from the file or enter it from the keyboard. Immediately after the key is found to be correct, the Licensee information will be shown at the bottom of this dialog and the OK button will be enabled. You can now use the SourceGlider!

If you have entered the Trial License Key into the dialog, you have only 30 days to evaluate SourceGlider. The number of days left will be shown at the bottom of the Analysis Report View. If you decide to purchase SourceGlider, you will get the Purchase License Key. You need to enter it the same way as you entered the Trial License Key, by selecting Source Analysis > Enter License Key... in the Eclipse menu or by following the link at the bottom of the Analysis Report View.

Note: When you are using SourceGlider in Trial Mode, some features are disabled. You cannot perform analysis on the sources bigger than 1M (except for performing the Structure Metrics Analysis). You cannot also load big analyses and dynamically add sources to the analysis to get the analysis on sources bigger than 1M.

Note: The 30 days evaluation period starts immediately after you have requested the Trial Key from our web site, but NOT from the moment you enter this key into SourceGlider. Therefore if you are not planning to try SourceGlider now, don't request the Trial License Key beforehand.

After the evaluation period expires, you will not be able to perform analyses, but you will still be able to load previously saved analyses and use all the SourceGlider features related to the loaded analysis except for performing the incremental analysis recomputation (analysis update).

When you reinstall (update) SourceGlider, your License Key will be saved and you don't need to enter it twice. If you have several instances of SourceGlider in different instances of Eclipse, you will still have only one instance of License Key.

Accessing Help

SourceGlider provides the set of tutorials covering the main aspects of working with the product. They can be accessed either at the web site or from the SourceGlider distribution package. To launch the tutorial demo from SourceGlider, select Source Analysis > Tutorials... in Eclipse menu, choose one of scenarios and click at the start link. It is recommended to watch the tutorials in consecutive order to avoid misunderstanding. Tutorial demonstrations are the Java applets and may be viewed in the Internet browser. Use the navigation buttons at the bottom of the demonstration screen:

  • Press the button to pause the demonstration
  • Press the button to stop the demonstration and return to the start of it
  • Press the button to resume the stopped or paused demonstration
  • Drag the slider to any position within the bar to proceed to the corresponding frame of the demonstration. Then you need to press the button to start playing from the chosen frame.

See SourceGlider User Manual for getting further information on SourceGlider. It can be displayed by either of the following ways:

  • Select Source Analysis > User Manual in Eclipse menu
  • Select Start > All Programs > SourceGlider for Eclipse > SourceGlider User Manual
  • Use Eclipse built-in help: select Help > Help Contents in Eclipse menu and choose SourceGlider User Guide topic there.
  • Read PDF file located in the installation directory of SourceGlider
  • Almost each view and dialog in Eclipse that was contributed by SourceGlider has Help buttons. By pressing these buttons you will get context sensitive help on the corresponding view or dialog.

If you wish to read the PDF version of User Manual, you may need to install Acrobat Reader. You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/.

Certain components of the Product use or incorporate third-party software programs and/or libraries ("Third-Party Software") which are loaded (in object or source code form, or both) on the Product media. You agree that World Wide League's third-party licensors and suppliers are intended third party beneficiaries of all terms and conditions of this License intended to protect intellectual property rights in the Product (including the Third-Party Software), limit certain uses thereof and disclaim warranty.

World Wide League'S TOTAL CUMULATIVE LIABILITY ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO THIS LICENSE OR THE PRODUCT, WHETHER IN CONTRACT, IN TORT OR OTHERWISE, WILL NOT EXCEED THE FEES ACTUALLY PAID BY YOU UNDER THIS LICENSE. During the term of this License and for one (1) year thereafter, upon reasonable notice and during normal business hours, World Wide League or its outside auditors will have the right to enter your premises and access your records and computer systems to verify that you have paid to World Wide League the correct amounts owed under this License and determine whether the Products are being used in accordance with the terms of this License. You will provide reasonable assistance to World Wide League in connection with this provision. You agree to pay the cost of the audit if any underpayments during the period covered by the audit amount to more than five percent (5%) of the fees actually owed for that period.
